How to Use This Template

The 400 Error template in the Rubric theme provides a professional, branded error page that maintains your site’s visual consistency when visitors encounter client-side request errors. Unlike the more common 404 “page not found” errors, 400 errors occur when a user’s browser sends an invalid request to your HubSpot site, such as malformed URLs or corrupted data submissions.

To activate this template, navigate to Website > Pages > System Pages in your HubSpot portal and assign the “System - 400 Error” template to your 400 error page. This ensures that any 400 errors display using Rubric’s clean, educational design aesthetic rather than a generic browser error message.

Customization Options

The template includes the Page Settings module, which allows you to toggle the header transparency setting. For educational institutions, keeping the header opaque (the default setting) often works better as it maintains clear navigation visibility when students or faculty encounter errors. However, you can enable transparency if your error page design benefits from a more streamlined header appearance.

The template automatically inherits your global navigation and footer elements, ensuring visitors can easily return to your main content areas even when encountering an error. This is particularly important for resource-heavy educational sites where users might be deep-linking to specific documents or course materials.

Best Practices

Consider customizing the error message content to reflect your institution’s tone and provide helpful next steps. Since 400 errors often result from bookmarked URLs that have become corrupted or expired, include guidance directing users to your main navigation or search functionality to help them find the content they originally sought.
