What Are Common Module Fields?

Common Module Fields are a set of fields used throughout multiple modules.

These fields are used to render common components like text, images, and sliders, as well as render common styles like box styles (backgrounds, borders, padding, etc.) and font styles (family, color, size, letter spacing, etc.).

In our Modules documentation, you can click on any item labeled as [Common Module Fields] to view a listing of the available fields (not all fields listed will be available in all modules).

How to Use Common Module Fields

When building pages with the Rubric theme, you’ll encounter Common Module Fields across most content modules in the page editor. These standardized fields create consistency across your educational or event site while streamlining your content creation workflow.

Accessing Common Module Fields happens automatically when you add modules to your pages. In the right-side inspector panel, you’ll see sections like “Box Styles” and “Typography” that contain these shared field sets. This means you won’t need to learn different styling controls for each module – once you understand how to adjust padding in one module, you can apply that knowledge everywhere.

Text and Typography fields let you override your theme’s default font settings on a per-module basis. This is particularly useful for education sites where you might want to emphasize key information with larger fonts or different colors. You can adjust font family, size, weight, and letter spacing without touching any code.

Box Style fields control your module’s visual container. You can add background colors or images, adjust borders, and modify spacing around content. For event sites showcasing multiple sessions or speakers, consistent box styling helps visitors scan information quickly.

Image and Media fields appear in modules that support visual content. These include alt text options for accessibility – crucial for education institutions that need to meet compliance standards.

The beauty of Common Module Fields lies in their inheritance system. Default styles pull from your theme settings, but you can override them at the module level when needed. This approach keeps your site visually cohesive while giving you flexibility for special content that needs to stand out, like featured courses or upcoming event highlights.
