We’re in a world of hopeless pessimists, negative Nancy’s, and rubberneckers. We curse in traffic, we get upset when our coffee isn't exactly the correct temperature of 195 degrees, and we cause a riot when it takes more than three minutes to get a refill of tortilla chips. We are ten times more interested in what is going on if someone is getting yelled at and a drink thrown in their face than we are if someone is hugging and having a lovely conversation over tea.
What is wrong with you people?
Ok. It’s not just you, it’s me too. Maybe it’s the drama, maybe it’s the excitement, or maybe it’s just that the human species is incredibly weird. We are ten times more likely to write a bad review than we are to write a good one (especially if it took more than 5 minutes to get your tortilla chips).
So where am I going with all this?
In certain scenarios when it comes to your content and your inbound marketing, (and I'm a lady so excuse my language), but bitchy blogs really do work. People are tired of reading the same crappy content. Sometimes you just need a good laugh and read something a little more interesting than "10 Ways to Increase Lead Generation by 0.10% in Ten Days." Let me give you some concrete evidence why bitchy blogs work:
- I wrote a series on why your tweets, emails, Facebook posts, landing pages, blogs, and homepages suck. I basically wrote blogs about how much you and everything in your inbound marketing sucks, and frankly you ate it right up. The Top 10 Reasons Your Homepage Sucks was written in November and it is now in the top 10 most viewed LyntonWeb blogs of all time. The Top 10 Reasons Your Landing Pages Suck is the #12 most viewed blog. Of. All. Time.
- We like to make fun of ourselves here at LyntonWeb, but we also like to poke a little fun of those those who think it’s best to practice traditional, outbound, outdated marketing. This particular blog had nothing but hilarious GIFs making fun of those who think it's best to not practice inbound marketing. 6 Signs You’re Not An Inbound Marketer had a massive number of visitors, and a lot of those visitors were also moving forward and clicking on our relevant call-to-action. It was so popular that it was also linked to other blogs and websites 19 times!
- We are all about providing helpful, relevant information and helping others make the most out of their inbound marketing. But not everyone is ready to dive head first into inbound marketing. The Sad But True Reasons You’re Really Not Ready For a Website Redesign was another popular blog that received more views than some of our more “helpful” and “pleasant” blogs. And it was all about why someone might not be ready to redesign their website. People, honesty works.
- Our newest venture, our Friday Fails videos, is all about pointing out how businesses (and yes even us here at the LyntonWeb corral) are screwing up the internet and marketing for everyone. We talk about what went wrong, why it’s a fail, and how you can fix it (of course we mix in a little bit of sarcasm and general hilarity). The videos on our blog have only been out a few weeks, and already have more views than some of our blogs written in 2012.
So at the end of the day, we are not telling you to be mean and tell your customers how much they suck and what you hate about them. What we are saying is that it’s important to stay up-to-date, pay attention to what content is working for you and what isn’t, and don’t be afraid to be a little bitchy now and then.
